Jasper James Artist Research

Jasper James

Jasper James is a professional photographer currently based in Beijing and Shanghai. Although editorial and corporate projects are a big part of his professional work, his photography interests are broader than fashion and advertising. He also enjoys travel photography, portraiture and concept-driven projects.

Jasper James has done a whole project based on combined imagery, this being called city silhouettes, it uses multiple exposure shots, that are views of this city skyline from a bird’s eye view inside a person’s silhouette. He says his images are “study someone appearance and traits and to then able to construct an image from that experience”

The image I have decided to analyse from City Silhouettes is this one, I like this image due to the innocence I feel it expresses. The image shows a small Asian boy looking out of what you could interpret as a window. I believe this image is able to show a child’s freedom, and possibly the thought of no worries. Due to photoshop editing the whole image is a translucent birds eye view of the city.

If I were to create images similar to this I would use an image I have taken in a studio, and possibly and picture of the London skyline, but at sunset as I believe this would be aesthetically pleasing. I would then possibly change the opacity of the images so that I my subject would become see through.

Cityscapes” by Jasper James

Altered Landscape

This is my Attempt at work similar to jasper james In which i did a Image merging technique like his photographs, I created this on photoshop. To create this image i Chose two images on portrait of my friend james, the other a skyline picture of London eye, i then cut the background out from james portrait and put it on top of the skyline shot i then proceeded to change the opacity of both images to compare to that of jasper james.

I first took both images this being one studio photo of my subject james, i then cut bis background out using the magic wand tool in photoshop.
I then brought the second image in that being a picture of the London eye, i tweaked the opacity first to see which would look better on the background image (London eye).
I then finally tweaked the opacity of the portrait of james, to get this final image.

Evaluation

I overall was happy with the way my image came out, it was a fairly simple image to make and was able to quickly do this. I like my response to Jasper James work as it show my city London instead of that of something like shanghai such as in his work. although with the time i had i was unable to get a good skyline shot and believe it is a weak picture compared to that of Jasper James work, I also believe my portrait could have had a more silhouette look to it but i couldn’t edit it without it looking worse the original image.

Nancy Burson

Nancy Burson is an American artist known for creating photographs using computer morphing technology, including the Age Machine, Human Race Machine and Anomaly Machine.

I like Nancy Bursons work as it isn’t just photography it also shows a lot of information in here work, as a lot of her works are like surveys for example the piece i will be looking at which is Mankind/ Womankind.

Intentions

For my piece i wish to recreate the idea of merging faces, but instead of numerous people i want to do one, this being my dad and i will get him do different poses/facial expressions.

” (From left to right: Mankind, Mankind/Womankind, Womankind). These images are all weighted to current population statistics from 2005″one in the middle as this is both woman and man.

I really like these images as it gives you a idea of what everyone looks like together especially the one in the middle as this is both woman and man. I have based my work of this but in my work i have only see my dad, but got his doing different facial expressions as i was curious to see how it would come out.
I first brought a couple of images in

Combined Imagery

Evaluation

I am happy with this work overall, i believe it looks good and almost looks like demon trying to come out. it is different to the work of Nancy Burson , but holds the same idea. The only thing i could of done better, was if i hadn’t changed it to black and white to have a white background on colour

Bobby Neel Adams

Bobby Neel Adams was born in Black Mountain, North Carolina and Currently lives in Arizona on the Mexico Border. He has exhibited worldwide and his photographs are in the International Center for Photography, NY, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Station Museum, diRosa Foundation, and the Norton Fam . The work his currently doing consists of series of Memento Mori photographs of insects, birds, and mammals.

Intentions

For my work I would like to do something similar to the work of Bobby Neel Adams, my idea is to use my subject James from a previous shoot and his Grandad and add them together.

“Age maps”

I like these images as i believe they could be featured in a old scrap book and looks like a photomontage. I also think it is very interesting to see how a person changes as they age and how similar family can look.

“Family tree”

I will be looking at 2 pieces of his family tree and age maps. as this relates to my current topic, of image morphing The one above (Age maps) focuses on the same person one half of the picture younger and other when he was older. whereas family tree focuses on relatives instead of the same person.

Distorted Portrait

This is my response to Bobby Neel Adams work
I first added both images into photoshop one being a picture of james and the other his grandad both my subjects. i then used james photo to create a layer mask.
I then began to use the layer mask to add half of james faces in to create this part of the image.
I then searched online for a rip effect download to add to photoshop, which is similar to Bobby Neel Adams photos
I then began to add it as a brush layer and apply it on the face
i each time changed the angle of the brush to make it looked ripped, this became the final image.

Evaluation

Overall Im not very happy with this image, as i was unable to get the correct brush tool from photoshop as i had to search online for a ripped type (which took a long time) And i couldn’t find the right size, due to my knowledge of photoshop lacking. i also believe it doesn’t look very good, and quite fake.

Pelle Cass Artist Research

Pelle cass lives in Brookline, Massachusetts and is most well known for his multiple exposure shots in which he takes hundreds of photos and merges them in to one, to gain results like this.

I really like Pelle cass work due to the bustling and busy nature of it, there is always something to look at and reminds me of a wheres Wally book. I also believe these pieces are always very intricate and must be a lot of hard work, as you have to edit every detail to make sure it looks correct. The shot above is part of a project called Crowded Fields 2017, in which He did many shots similar to this in sporting locations.

Intentions

For My work i would like to add a lot of people into a image like Pelle Cass does, but relate it to something i do which would be skateboarding.

Combined imagery

My attempt at work similar to that of pelle cass.

This shot was made using Photoshop in which i used 6 Layer masks and one background to create this image i did this this:

I first gathered all my images photoshop so i could begin editing them.
I then hid all the layers on photoshop using this setting, this will allow me to accurately edit certain parts of the image to the layer. I then repeated the process of selecting 1 person/ a couple each time until i was happy with it

Overall i am happy with how the image came out it does not look very messy as i worked hard on the making sure the editing of the photo was correct, i also like how every person in the picture response was in fact not there at the same time, as i used the layer mask to put them in. However i regret not being able to make it look more bustling with people as that one was one of the main goals, but due to it being hard to edit i was unable top do it in time.

Pelle cass further editing/ more photos

These are my final two images i did for another set of Pelle Cass portfolio, this one being called selected people, i did these two pieces on my dad from portrait pictures, had taken, where i got him to do different faces in each one.
To create My final images I first selected the best images from my work and added a layer mask to each one. I then started editing bits of his face. I started removing his original eye and replaced in with another one in which he looks to the right.
I then next edited his mouth,i did the same thing as the eye and selected it from another image created a layer mask and added it in as i was happy with this one i saved it as my first image.
I then wanted to create another images o i continued to use a layer mask to switch the nose out this was the result.
I then wanted to change the mouth again to something that looks different, so i added another image and again created another layer mask, i then brought the mouth in.
